Why spin behaviour matters more around the green than off the tee
Backspin is discussed almost entirely as a driving statistic, yet the place where a player's control of spin actually determines a score is in the shots played from inside a hundred yards.

Two different jobs for the same property
Backspin from a driver primarily governs how the ball climbs and how far it carries, since almost all of that shot happens in the air. Backspin on a short approach governs what happens after landing, which is the part of the shot the player actually needs to control. The first is a launch condition optimised once with a fitting and then largely left alone across a season.
The second varies shot by shot with the lie, the moisture on the ball, the condition of the grooves and the angle of the strike. Attention in equipment discussion is concentrated almost entirely on the first, which is the one a player influences least during a round.
What actually creates spin at impact
Spin is generated by friction between the clubface and the ball during the very short interval in which the two are in contact. Anything reducing that friction reduces spin, which is why moisture, grass and dirt on the face all produce a ball that releases further than intended. Grooves do not create spin so much as provide somewhere for displaced material to go, preserving contact between the face and the ball surface.
As grooves wear, their capacity to channel that material falls, and a player gradually loses spin without any change in how the club is delivered. This decline is slow enough that most players attribute the resulting long shots to technique rather than to equipment.
Why landing angle is the other half
A ball can be stopped by spin or by arriving steeply, and a high shot descending sharply will hold a green with relatively little backspin. Skilled players use both, adding height when the lie will not permit spin and adding spin when the flight has to stay low under wind. The choice between them is dictated by conditions rather than preference, which is why the same distance produces different shots on different days.
Firm greens narrow the options considerably, because a shot arriving at a shallow angle onto firm turf will run regardless of how it was struck. This is the mechanism by which a course can be made demanding without lengthening a single hole.
The half-shot problem
A full swing produces predictable spin because the clubhead is travelling at a speed the player has repeated many thousands of times. A partial swing does not, since reducing speed changes both the friction at impact and the angle the club approaches on. This is why the distances between full-swing yardages are the hardest part of the game for most competitive players.
Players address it by carrying more wedges with different lofts, which converts awkward partial shots into full ones wherever possible. The equipment solution exists precisely because the technical solution is genuinely difficult even at the highest level.
Why conditions dominate everything
Morning dew adds moisture between the face and the ball, so an early round produces less spin than an identical shot in the afternoon. A ball played from wet rough carries a film of water into the collision that behaves much like a lubricant. Cold air is denser and reduces carry, but it also stiffens the ball, which changes how it deforms against the face and therefore how it spins.
Players who compete across seasons and climates spend considerable practice time recalibrating these relationships rather than changing their swings. None of that appears in a scorecard, and all of it explains why the same player scores differently on the same course.
