Why an Olympic cycle shapes training more than any single competition
Sports that peak once every four years build their entire preparation around a date most athletes will reach only two or three times, and that structure changes what training is even trying to achieve.

What a long horizon permits
An athlete preparing for a competition four years away can afford a season in which performance deliberately declines while an underlying capacity is rebuilt. That is impossible in a sport with annual prize money or league standings, because a deliberate dip in form has immediate financial and selection consequences. Technical changes are the clearest example, since altering a movement pattern usually makes an athlete worse for many months before it makes them better.
Coaches in cycle sports therefore schedule such changes early, accepting a poor year in exchange for a higher ceiling later in the cycle. The structure of the calendar is doing as much work here as any training method the coach might select.
How periodisation actually divides the years
The early part of a cycle typically emphasises general capacity, tolerance for training load and the correction of the imbalances a previous cycle produced. The middle years shift toward specific work, in which the training more closely resembles the demands of the event itself. The final year narrows further still, reducing volume and raising intensity so that the athlete arrives fresh rather than merely fit.
Each phase is defined by what it makes possible in the next, which is why a coach can call a poor season successful without contradiction. The failure mode is a cycle in which every year is treated as important, leaving the athlete adapted to everything and peaked for nothing.
Why peaking is a scheduling problem
Fitness and freshness move in opposite directions, because the training that builds capacity also creates fatigue that masks it. A taper works by allowing fatigue to dissipate faster than fitness does, which produces a window where measured performance exceeds anything seen in training. That window is narrow and cannot easily be extended, so the taper has to be timed against a fixed date rather than adjusted to how the athlete feels.
Athletes who peak early are visibly excellent at a warm-up meeting and slightly flat when it matters, which is a planning failure rather than a physical one. Coaches rehearse the taper in earlier years precisely so that its timing is known rather than estimated when it finally counts.
The distorting effect of a fixed date
An injury that costs six months matters very differently depending on where in the cycle it lands, which is not true in a sport played every week. The same injury early in a cycle is an inconvenience absorbed by the general preparation phase and largely forgotten by the time selection arrives. Arriving in the final year, it can end a career's only realistic opportunity despite the athlete recovering completely a few months later.
This asymmetry pushes athletes toward conservative decisions late in a cycle and aggressive ones early, which is rational and rarely explained. It also explains why some athletes appear to underperform for years and then produce their best work at exactly the right moment.
Why funding follows the same rhythm
Support programmes in many countries allocate resources against a cycle rather than a season, so an athlete's income can depend on a single selection decision. That structure concentrates pressure on trials and qualification events, which then become higher-stakes occasions than the competition they lead toward. Athletes in sports without a professional circuit have very little to fall back on if the cycle goes badly, regardless of their underlying ability.
The result is a system that produces extraordinary peaks and offers little to the athletes who miss the window by a small margin. Understanding the funding rhythm explains far more about athlete behaviour than any account of training methods can.
