How a defensive scheme decides which shots it is willing to concede
No defence can protect everywhere at once, so every system in the sport is a statement about which attempts it would rather allow, and its success depends on whether the opponent will take them.

Why a defence must concede something
There are more places to attack from than there are defenders available, so no arrangement covers the entire floor with equal intensity. A coach therefore decides in advance which attempts to contest aggressively and which to accept, and builds the rotations around that decision. The choice is usually informed by which shots produce the most points on average rather than by which look most dangerous.
Attempts close to the basket and attempts from long range are the most valuable, which leaves the intermediate distance as the natural concession. This is why so many defences appear to invite a shot from mid-range and then converge violently on anything nearer or further out.
How the concession is enforced
Enforcing a concession requires defenders to close out in a way that discourages one shot while permitting another, which is a specific technical skill. A defender closing out with a high hand and a short final step prevents a long-range attempt while conceding a drive he expects help to cover. A defender closing out under control with a lower stance discourages the drive and accepts the shot, which is the opposite instruction.
The two look similar in isolation and produce completely different outcomes, which is why the detail occupies so much practice time. Mistakes here rarely appear as obvious errors; they appear as a defence that concedes the wrong thing without anyone noticing why.
When the plan meets a comfortable opponent
A scheme conceding intermediate shots works only if the opponent is uncomfortable taking them or unable to make them at a reasonable rate. Against a team that has practised precisely those attempts, the concession becomes a gift and the defence has organised itself around a false assumption. Adjusting mid-game is difficult, because the rotations behind the concession were built to protect other areas and cannot simply be reversed.
Coaches therefore prepare secondary schemes and switch between them rather than attempting to modify a single system under pressure. The visible switch is usually a change of concession rather than a change of effort, though it is frequently described as the latter.
Why switching changed the calculation
A defence that switches assignments on contact removes the moments of separation that screening actions are designed to create. It concedes something different, namely a mismatch, where a smaller defender ends up guarding a larger player or a slower one guards a quicker player. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on how quickly the offence can find the mismatch and whether it can exploit it before help arrives.
Teams therefore attack switches by moving the ball immediately rather than by isolating, since delay allows the defence to reset its shape. The rise of switching is really a judgement that momentary mismatches cost less than repeated separation on screens.
What the scheme asks of individuals
Every system depends on defenders performing an assigned role rather than making the play that appears best from their own position. A defender who helps when the scheme did not call for it may prevent one attempt and open a better one behind him. This is why defensive statistics for individuals are so difficult to interpret without knowing what the player was instructed to do.
A player recording few visible defensive actions may be executing his role precisely, while a more active one may be repeatedly out of position. Evaluating defence therefore requires understanding the concession before judging anyone's contribution to enforcing it.
