Faster putting surfaces do not simply make putts harder to hole; they move the difficulty of a hole backwards into the approach shot and change where a player can afford to miss.

What green speed actually measures

The speed of a putting surface is a description of how far a ball rolls for a given amount of energy, governed by grass height, moisture and firmness. A faster surface returns more of the energy a putter imparts, so the same stroke sends the ball substantially further than it would on a slower green. That relationship is not linear in practice, because a faster surface also allows gravity more time to act on the ball as it slows.

Speed and slope therefore multiply each other rather than adding, which is why a modest gradient becomes severe once the surface is running quickly. Greenkeepers manage the two together, since a contour that is fair at one speed can be effectively unplayable at another.

Why the difficulty moves backwards

On a slow surface, a player can leave an approach shot almost anywhere on the green and still expect a straightforward two-putt. On a fast one, the area from which a two-putt is comfortable shrinks dramatically, often to a portion of the green rather than the whole of it. The consequence is that the approach shot must now find a specific region, which raises the demand on a club the player is hitting from a distance.

Difficulty has therefore migrated from the putter to the iron, even though nothing about the hole's length or the hazards has changed. This is the single most powerful lever available to anyone setting up a course for a serious competition.

The above-the-hole problem

A putt struck downhill on a fast surface requires so little energy that the player has almost no margin between leaving it short and running it well past. The same putt from below the hole can be struck firmly, which reduces the influence of small imperfections in the surface along the way. Players therefore aim to leave approach shots below the hole, and that intention dictates which side of the green they attack.

Where the safe side conflicts with the direct line, the player faces a genuine strategic decision rather than a simple execution question. Hole locations are chosen precisely to create that conflict on holes where the architecture supports it.

Why recovery shots change character

A missed green beside a fast putting surface leaves a chip that must land on a small area and stop before gravity takes over. The same miss beside a slower surface allows a player to land the ball anywhere reasonable and rely on the grass to arrest it. Short-game difficulty is therefore set by green speed as much as by the length of grass around the putting surface.

This is why some courses feel punishing without having any deep rough, and others feel forgiving despite a thick collar. The relationship between the two is what makes a setup feel coherent or arbitrary to the players competing on it.

The limits of pushing speed

Beyond a certain point, increasing speed on a contoured green produces positions where a ball will not remain at rest wherever it is placed. Wind, firmness and afternoon drying all shift the surface further during a day, so a setup that was demanding in the morning can become unreasonable later. Superintendents therefore manage speed conservatively during competition, because the margin between challenging and farcical is narrower than spectators assume.

Older courses with severe contours are particularly constrained, since their greens were built for surfaces that ran far more slowly than modern maintenance permits. The tension between historic architecture and contemporary maintenance is one of the quieter constraints on how classic venues can be presented.
