Why pin position changes a hole more than yardage does
The location of the hole on a green determines which side of the fairway a player wants to be on, which turns a single yardage into several different holes across a week of competition.

Why the hole location comes first
A player planning a hole works backwards from where the ball needs to finish on the green, then chooses the approach position that makes that finish easiest. That approach position dictates the side of the fairway to aim at from the tee, which in turn dictates the club and the intended shot shape. Move the hole to the other side of the green and the entire chain reverses, even though the yardage on the card is unchanged.
This is why professionals study hole location sheets before a round rather than treating them as an afterthought once they arrive. A hole is not a fixed object; it is a puzzle that is reconfigured each morning by whoever cuts the new location.
How angle beats distance
Approaching a hole cut behind a bunker from the wrong side of the fairway means flying the ball over the hazard with very little green beyond it. Approaching the same location from the opposite side opens up the length of the green, so the ball can land short and run toward the target. The second player may be considerably further from the hole and still be playing a much simpler shot.
Distance is easy to measure and angle is not, which is why broadcast coverage consistently overstates the importance of the former. Architects who understood this built fairways that reward a specific side rather than simply punishing a miss.
Why difficult locations lengthen a hole
When the hole sits near an edge with trouble beyond it, players aim for the middle of the green and accept a longer putt rather than risk the short-side miss. That decision converts a birdie opportunity into a par attempt, which is functionally the same as making the hole longer without moving a tee. A short hole with a severe location can therefore play harder than a long hole with a generous one.
Setup committees use this deliberately, pairing a forward tee with a demanding location to create a hole that tempts and punishes in equal measure. The scoring average tells you the hole was hard; only the location sheet tells you why.
The rotation across a competition
Locations are rotated through the week so that no player faces the same version of a hole twice and no single area of a green wears out. Rotation also lets a committee shape the character of each day, easing the setup early and tightening it as the field narrows. Wind direction on any given morning interacts with the chosen location, so a plan made in advance often has to be adjusted at first light.
A location that is fair in a crosswind can become unreasonable in a following wind because the ball simply will not hold the surface. Good setup is therefore reactive work rather than a schedule that can be published and left alone.
What players actually control
A player cannot influence the location, but he can decide how much risk to accept in pursuit of the angle it rewards. That decision is made on the tee, several minutes and one full shot before the consequence becomes visible. Players who commit to the angle sometimes end up in the rough on the correct side and still hold an advantage over a fairway on the wrong one.
This is the part of course management that separates competitors of similar ball-striking ability across four rounds. It is also the part that is least visible to anyone watching individual shots rather than following a single player for a whole round.
