Why grass rewards the first three shots more than any other surface
A low, fast bounce compresses the time available in a rally, which means the serve, the return and the shot after it decide a far larger share of points than they do elsewhere.

What the surface does to the ball
Grass offers relatively little friction, so a ball arriving at pace keeps more of its speed and rises to a lower height than on other surfaces. A lower bounce means the striker meets the ball nearer to knee height, which is a less powerful position from which to generate topspin. The combination reduces the time available to prepare and reduces the margin a player can build into a shot by hitting it heavily over the net.
Rallies therefore end sooner, not because players choose to shorten them but because the surface makes extended exchanges harder to sustain. That single property explains most of what distinguishes the surface from the others on the calendar.
Why the serve gains so much
A serve struck with slice stays especially low after bouncing, which forces the returner to lift the ball and reduces what he can do with it. The returner also has less time overall, so the range of returns available narrows to whatever can be executed with compact preparation. Servers consequently win a larger share of points early in a rally, which raises the value of holding and lowers the frequency of breaks.
That structure makes individual games less eventful and individual moments more decisive, which is a different rhythm from other surfaces. It also rewards a player who can serve well under pressure far more than one who simply serves well on average.
How slice changes from defensive to offensive
A sliced shot carries backspin, which keeps the ball low after bouncing and, on grass, keeps it lower still than the player expects. On a high-bouncing surface the same shot sits up and invites an attacking response, which is why it is used defensively there. On grass it forces the opponent to strike upward from below the net, which restricts what he can attempt and often produces a weak reply.
Players with a well-developed slice therefore find a whole category of shots that are far more effective on this surface than elsewhere. This is the clearest example of the surface rewarding a specific technical skill rather than a general level of ability.
Why movement is different
The surface is softer underfoot and can be slippery, particularly in the early days before the court has worn in. Sliding into a shot is not reliable, so players take shorter steps and stay lower, which changes the entire pattern of their footwork. That lower posture is physically demanding to hold, and it is one reason players unfamiliar with the surface tire in unexpected ways.
The court also changes across a tournament as the grass wears, which alters both the bounce and the reliability of the footing. Adapting to a court that is physically changing beneath you is a demand no other surface makes to the same degree.
What the compressed timeline rewards
When points are short, the ability to execute a plan immediately matters more than the ability to construct one over many shots. Players who prefer to work an opponent out of position gradually find that the surface does not grant them the exchanges required. Anticipation becomes disproportionately valuable, since a fraction of a second gained by reading a serve correctly changes what is possible.
The result is a form of the sport that rewards a different mixture of qualities from the one that dominates most of the season. That divergence is why performances on grass have always mapped so imperfectly onto results everywhere else.
