How a safety car rewrites the value of every position on the road
A neutralised race does not simply pause the action; it converts the gaps drivers have spent an hour building into nothing and turns a settled strategy into a decision nobody had time to plan.

Why a stop suddenly becomes cheap
The time lost in a pit stop is not the duration of the stop itself but the difference between pit lane speed and racing speed over that stretch. When the field is circulating slowly behind a safety car, that difference collapses, so the same stop costs a fraction of what it did a lap earlier. Cars that have already stopped gain nothing from the neutralisation, while cars still to stop receive an advantage they did not earn on track.
This is why a race can appear to be settled and then reorder itself entirely without a single overtake taking place. The mechanism is arithmetic rather than luck, though the timing of the call is genuinely random from any team's perspective.
Why the gaps disappear
A driver who has built a comfortable margin over an hour of racing sees it reduced to a car length once the field closes up behind the safety car. That margin represented accumulated advantage, and nothing in the rules converts it into anything else when the race is neutralised. Drivers therefore experience neutralisation as a confiscation, and the frustration expressed on the radio reflects a real loss rather than temperament.
The alternative arrangements that have been tried preserve safety at the cost of a very long procession, which broadcasters and audiences dislike. The sport has repeatedly traded competitive fairness for spectacle at this point, and the tension has never been fully resolved.
Why leaders and midfield runners want opposite things
A leader who has already stopped wants the race resumed immediately, because every neutralised lap erodes the advantage that made him a leader. A driver yet to stop wants the neutralisation to last, because it converts a mandatory loss into something close to a free pit visit. Cars towards the back of the field often gain positions simply through where they happened to be when the call was made.
None of these outcomes reflect performance, which is why a neutralised race produces results that look strange in isolation and make sense in sequence. Teams therefore build contingency plans for each phase of a race rather than deciding when the call actually arrives.
The queue problem in the pit lane
When both cars from one team need to stop under the same neutralisation, the second car must wait for the first, which costs it real time. Teams facing that situation often split the strategy, stopping one car and leaving the other out to avoid the delay entirely. The decision has to be made within seconds, because the pit entry passes quickly and there is no opportunity to reconsider.
Pit lanes also become crowded when much of the field arrives simultaneously, which raises the risk of an unsafe release for everyone involved. This is why some teams decline an apparently obvious stop and accept a worse tyre in exchange for a clean lane.
Why restarts change the picture again
Tyres and brakes cool substantially during a neutralised period, so the first corners after a restart offer far less grip than the laps preceding it. Cars that stopped for fresh tyres are at the greatest disadvantage here, since new rubber takes longer to reach its working range than used rubber does. The driver leading the queue controls the pace of the restart within defined limits, which is a meaningful advantage over everyone behind him.
Concertina effects through the field mean the cars at the back accelerate later and harder, which is where most restart incidents originate. A neutralisation therefore ends with a period of elevated risk, which is an uncomfortable feature of a procedure introduced for safety.
