The first signal is effort, not slip

As a front tyre begins to lose its ability to generate lateral force, the resistance the driver feels through the steering column changes before the car visibly slides. The wheel becomes lighter in the loaded phase of a corner, because the tyre is no longer building the self-aligning force that pushes the steering back toward centre. That lightness arrives first and is subtle enough that drivers describe it as the car going quiet rather than as any loss of grip.

Recognising it early is valuable, because a driver who adjusts at this stage can preserve the tyre for a considerably longer stint. Ignoring it leads directly to the next stage, in which the tyre begins to slide across the surface and heat rapidly.

Why the instinctive response is wrong

A car that will not turn as expected invites the driver to apply more steering angle, which feels like the obvious correction to make. More angle beyond the tyre's peak produces less cornering force rather than more, and it scrubs the tyre against the road at the same time. That scrubbing raises surface temperature, which pushes the compound further past its working range and accelerates the loss it was meant to fix.

The effective response is the opposite: reduce the angle, accept a wider line and allow the tyre to work within what it can still deliver. Learning that response is difficult because it requires acting against a reflex at the moment the car feels least secure.

Where the time is actually lost

A degraded front tyre costs most of its lap time at the point of turn-in, before the driver has committed to the corner at all. The car takes longer to establish rotation, so the driver arrives at the apex late and cannot apply power at the point he would normally choose. Because the exit is compromised, the loss is carried down the following straight, which multiplies a small entry deficit into a visible gap.

Two drivers with identical mid-corner speed can therefore differ substantially in sector time purely through what happened at entry. This is why telemetry engineers look at the initial steering trace rather than the minimum speed when diagnosing a complaint about grip.

How drivers change their approach

Managing a fading front axle usually means braking slightly earlier and releasing the brake more gradually so that load transfers onto the tyre more gently. A smoother release keeps the contact patch stable, which allows the tyre to build force progressively rather than being asked for everything at once. Drivers also move the line, entering wider to reduce the peak demand and accepting a lower minimum speed in exchange for a usable exit.

These adjustments cost time on every lap and cost less than the alternative, which is arriving at a pit stop several laps earlier than planned. The judgement about when to start managing rather than attacking is one of the clearest separations between experienced and inexperienced drivers.

Why the graph and the sensation disagree

Lap time degradation appears smooth on a chart because it averages several corners with different demands into a single number per lap. The driver experiences something far less smooth, since one particular corner will feel wrong long before the average moves at all. That corner is usually the one that loads the tyre longest, and it functions as an early warning for the rest of the lap.

Engineers who ask a driver whether the tyre is finished are often asking about that corner specifically rather than about the lap as a whole. The mismatch between measured degradation and felt degradation is a large part of why radio conversations about tyres sound so imprecise.
