Why the new ball is the hardest phase

A new ball is hard, has a pronounced seam and retains a lacquered surface, all of which help it deviate through the air and off the pitch. It also arrives faster off the surface because a hard ball loses less energy on impact than one that has been softened by use. The bowlers using it are fresh, the field is set for catches and the batters have not yet adjusted to the pace of the surface.

Every one of those factors decays over the following overs, which means the difficulty of batting falls substantially without anyone doing anything. Surviving that phase therefore carries a value entirely independent of the number of runs actually scored while it lasted.

What openers actually learn

A batter facing the new ball discovers how much the surface is offering, how the ball is behaving in the air and how the bowlers are attempting to use both. That information is communicated to the players waiting to bat, who would otherwise arrive with nothing beyond what they could see from a distance. The pace of the outfield, the reliability of the bounce and the areas where the surface is doing something unusual are all learned rather than observed.

Middle-order batters arriving after a long opening stand therefore begin with an advantage that has nothing to do with the score. This is why teams value openers who occupy time even when their scoring rate looks unimpressive on a scorecard.

How the ball changes underneath the batter

As the lacquer wears and the ball softens, movement through the air reduces and the ball comes onto the bat more predictably. One side of the ball may be maintained deliberately, which preserves the potential for movement later in the innings once the contrast is sufficient. The seam flattens against the square, so the deviation available after landing declines steadily through the first several dozen overs.

Each of these processes has its own timescale, which is why the difficulty of batting does not fall smoothly but in identifiable stages. Batters who understand the stages can plan when to accelerate rather than reacting to how they happen to be feeling.

Why early wickets compound

A team losing openers cheaply sends middle-order batters in against a ball that is still hard and bowlers who are still fresh. Those batters are technically suited to a different phase of the innings and are being asked to perform a job they do not usually do. The scoreboard pressure created by early wickets also removes the option of simply occupying time, which is the correct response to the conditions.

The two constraints conflict directly, and a batting side attempting to satisfy both usually satisfies neither. This is the mechanism by which a modest opening failure turns into a substantially larger collapse.

What the opposition is trying to protect

A bowling side knows the new ball is its best opportunity, so it commits its most dangerous bowlers and its most attacking fields to that period. Failing to take wickets during it means bowling with a softer ball to set batters on a surface that is easier than it was. Captains therefore hold overs in reserve for the second new ball and plan the intervening period around containment rather than dismissal.

That plan requires bowlers willing to operate without immediate reward, which is an underappreciated part of building a bowling attack. The contest between the two approaches is what gives the longer format its shape across a day rather than across an over.
