What a prepared surface actually is

A cricket pitch is a strip of rolled soil with a controlled moisture content and a covering of grass cut to a chosen length. Rolling compacts the soil so that the ball bounces predictably, and the moisture holds that compaction together during the early part of a match. As the surface dries, the binding weakens and the top layer begins to break apart under the repeated impact of the ball.

That process starts immediately and produces no visible change for a considerable period, which is why early behaviour predicts later behaviour poorly. Groundstaff can influence the starting point and cannot control the rate at which the surface subsequently changes.

Why the first morning behaves differently

A pitch retaining moisture allows the seam to grip when the ball lands, which produces the lateral movement associated with the opening session. The same moisture makes the surface slightly softer, so the ball tends to hold up rather than skidding onto the bat as it will later. Overhead conditions interact with this, since a humid atmosphere assists movement through the air independently of what the surface is doing.

The combination makes early batting demanding in a way that has little to do with the pitch deteriorating and everything to do with it being fresh. This is why the decision at the toss is genuinely difficult rather than a formality determined by looking at the strip.

How wear creates variation rather than difficulty

Bowlers landing the ball repeatedly in a similar area gradually roughen that patch, removing the smooth surface the ball would otherwise strike. A ball pitching on the roughened area behaves differently from one landing beside it, which introduces uncertainty rather than a consistent new condition. That uncertainty is what troubles batters, because a surface that turns predictably is far easier to play than one that turns occasionally.

The same applies to cracks, which open as the surface dries and produce inconsistent bounce when the ball happens to land on one. Deterioration is therefore best understood as increasing variance rather than as the pitch simply becoming harder to bat on.

Why footmarks matter so much

Bowlers follow through onto an area outside the line of the stumps, and repeated contact churns that patch into loose material. A spinner operating from the opposite end can land the ball in those marks, which produces sharper turn and inconsistent bounce. The advantage is available only to bowlers turning the ball in the appropriate direction, which is why match-ups become so specific late in a game.

Batters respond by adjusting their guard or by attempting to disrupt the length, both of which carry their own risks. The location of the marks relative to each batter's stance can decide a session without appearing in any description of the conditions.

Why the same surface suits different bowlers on different days

Early moisture assists seam movement, so bowlers relying on lateral deviation from the surface are most dangerous when the pitch is fresh. As it dries and hardens, the ball skids on more, which favours pace and accuracy over movement for a period in the middle of a match. Later still, the breaking surface offers grip to spin and inconsistent bounce to anyone hitting the rough areas.

A captain therefore holds different bowlers back for different phases, which is a plan made before the match rather than a reaction within it. Reading which phase a surface has entered is one of the least visible and most consequential judgements in the longer format.
