Why Relay Baton Exchanges Decide Medals

The changeover zone allows a receiving runner to reach near-full speed before taking the baton, which makes exchange technique worth more than individual sprint ability.

A relay team is rarely the sum of four individual times. The exchanges account for a substantial portion of the result, and teams with slower runners regularly beat faster ones.

The zone exists so the baton never slows down

Rules define a marked zone within which the baton must pass from one runner to the next, and the receiver may begin running before the incoming runner arrives.

Executed well, the baton changes hands while both athletes are moving at close to full speed, so the implement itself barely decelerates.

Executed poorly, the receiver waits or the incoming runner has to reach, and the baton loses speed that must then be regained from a standing acceleration.

The start mark is the technical core of the exchange

Receivers place a mark on the track and begin running when the incoming runner reaches it, which converts a judgement call into a fixed trigger.

Its position is calibrated in training to the specific pairing, accounting for the incoming runner's speed at that point and the receiver's acceleration profile.

Because it is pair-specific, changing one athlete in a squad requires recalibrating the exchanges around them, which is why settled teams outperform assembled ones.

Blind exchanges trade safety for speed

In the sprint relay the receiver does not look back, relying entirely on the mark and a verbal call, which allows full acceleration without losing form.

The risk is obvious. A mistimed call or a fractionally early start puts the receiver beyond the incoming runner's reach and outside the zone.

Longer relays use visual exchanges, where the receiver looks for the baton, since the incoming runner arrives fatigued and at less predictable speed.

Disqualification risk shapes strategy

An exchange completed outside the zone results in disqualification regardless of finishing position, so teams must balance aggression against certainty.

Conservative exchanges cost time but almost never fail, and teams with a clear speed advantage often choose them deliberately in early rounds.

In finals the calculation reverses, because a safe exchange that costs a fraction of a second is enough to lose a medal to a team taking more risk.

Running order is a separate optimisation

Legs differ. The first involves starting blocks and a bend, the second and fourth are long straights, and the third runs a full bend.

Teams assign athletes by suitability rather than raw speed, placing strong bend runners on the curved legs and a reliable starter first.

The fastest athlete is not automatically placed last, since the value of a leg depends on the exchanges surrounding it as much as on the running itself.
