Why an even pace is efficient

Running at a constant speed keeps an athlete close to the intensity their aerobic system can sustain without accumulating byproducts faster than they clear. Every deviation above that intensity draws on anaerobic contribution, which produces power quickly and creates a cost that must be repaid later. Deviations below it waste time that cannot be recovered without a compensating effort somewhere else in the race.

This is why time trials and record attempts are run to a metronomic schedule rather than with the variation seen in championship racing. The physiology favours evenness, and everything else in a race is a departure from it for tactical reasons.

What a surge actually costs

A mid-race acceleration lifts intensity above the sustainable threshold for as long as it lasts and for some period afterwards. The cost is not paid immediately, which is what makes surging feel viable in the moment and expensive in the closing stages. Athletes who respond to several surges have made several withdrawals, and the account has to balance before the finish regardless of position.

This is the mechanism behind the runner who leads with a lap remaining and finishes well down the field. The surges that beat him were not faster than he could run; they were more numerous than he could afford to answer.

Why championship races are slow and hard

When placing matters more than time, no athlete has an incentive to lead, so the early pace falls well below what the field could sustain. A slow early portion leaves everyone with substantial reserves, which converts the closing stage into a much shorter and faster contest. That format favours athletes with speed over those whose advantage lies in sustained aerobic capacity, regardless of who is stronger over the distance.

Athletes who know they will lose a fast finish must therefore make the race honest early, which means spending their own reserves to remove someone else's. Doing so is a calculated sacrifice and is very often unsuccessful, which is why it is attempted less frequently than commentators suggest.

Positioning as an energy question

Running behind another athlete reduces air resistance, and over a long distance that shelter represents a genuine and cumulative energy saving. Running wide on a bend adds distance, so a poorly positioned athlete covers measurably further than one holding the inside line. Being boxed in costs nothing in energy and everything in options, since the athlete cannot respond to a move at the moment it happens.

Positioning is therefore a continuous negotiation between energy saved and freedom retained, and the balance shifts as the race shortens. Athletes who position well are making a physiological decision that only looks like a tactical instinct from outside.

Why terrain and conditions rewrite the plan

On a road course, hills force intensity above and below the sustainable level regardless of what pace the athlete intends to hold. Running an even effort on undulating terrain produces an uneven pace, and running an even pace produces an uneven and more costly effort. Heat compounds the problem, because heat dissipation competes with working muscle for blood flow and raises the cost of any given speed.

Wind introduces the same asymmetry as positioning, which is why packs form on exposed courses and dissolve on sheltered ones. In every case, the tactical decision is downstream of a physiological constraint the athlete is continuously estimating.
