Why Marathon Courses Cannot Be Compared Directly
Elevation change, turns, surface and prevailing weather vary enough between certified courses that finishing times from different cities describe different physical tasks.

Every certified marathon covers the same distance, and that is where the similarity ends. Two runners producing identical times on different courses have not performed equivalent efforts.
Certification standardises distance, not difficulty
Course measurement follows a defined procedure using a calibrated bicycle, with the measured line taken along the shortest legal path a runner could follow.
The procedure also adds a small margin to guarantee the course is never short, which is why measured routes are marginally longer than the nominal distance.
None of this addresses gradient, turns or surface, so certification confirms only that the distance is correct and comparable.
Net elevation drop is regulated for record purposes
A course that descends substantially from start to finish makes a faster time achievable, so record eligibility limits how much net drop is permitted per kilometre.
A separation limit also applies between start and finish, preventing a course arranged so that a prevailing tailwind assists runners for the whole distance.
Courses failing these criteria remain legitimate races with legitimate results, but their times are not eligible for record purposes.
Turns cost more than the map suggests
Each sharp turn requires deceleration and reacceleration, and the energy spent doing so does not appear anywhere in the elevation profile.
A course routed through a dense city centre with frequent corners is measurably harder than a flat course with long straight sections.
Pack running compounds it, since runners on the inside of a turn take a shorter line and those forced wide cover additional distance repeatedly.
Weather is the largest uncontrolled variable
Temperature affects marathon performance strongly, because heat dissipation becomes limiting well before fuel does over that duration.
Humidity matters as much as temperature, since evaporative cooling is what removes heat and high humidity reduces its effectiveness.
Race organisers select dates and start times to manage this, which is why the fastest courses tend to be in cool climates with early starts.
Comparison requires context rather than raw times
Analysts adjust results using course and conditions data, producing an estimate of what a performance would have been on a neutral course.
These adjustments are approximate, since individual runners respond differently to heat and to hills, and no single correction fits everyone.
The practical consequence is that ranking marathon performances requires knowing where and when they happened, which is not true of track events run on standardised ovals.
