Why Court Surfaces Produce Different Champions
Bounce height and ball speed vary substantially between clay, grass and hard courts, and those two properties reward opposite technical and physical profiles.

Tennis is the rare sport where the playing surface changes several times a season and changes the game with it. Two physical properties account for nearly all of the difference.
Friction determines how much speed the ball keeps
When a ball lands it slides briefly before gripping. A high-friction surface such as clay converts more of the ball's forward speed into upward motion and spin.
Grass has low friction and a shallow, fast skid. The ball retains speed through the bounce and stays low, which shortens the time a player has to prepare a shot.
Hard courts sit between the two and vary considerably by construction, since the amount of sand in the surface coating can be adjusted to make a court faster or slower.
Bounce height changes which shots are viable
A high bounce brings the ball into the strike zone above the shoulder for many players, which suits heavy topspin and penalises flat, low-contact hitting.
A low bounce does the opposite. Slice becomes genuinely threatening because the ball stays beneath comfortable contact height, and players with compact swings gain an advantage.
This is why a one-handed backhand is often more effective on grass than on clay. The stroke handles low balls well and struggles with sustained high ones.
Movement is a different skill on each surface
Clay allows a controlled slide into the shot, which means a player can recover balance while still moving and can defend positions that would be unreachable elsewhere.
On grass the footing is firm but the surface can be uneven, and players must stop and reset rather than slide, which places different demands on the legs.
Hard courts provide the most reliable footing and the least forgiveness, since stopping forces are absorbed entirely by the body rather than partly by the surface.
Rally length follows from all of the above
Clay produces the longest rallies because the surface returns the ball slowly and rewards defence. Points are won by construction over several shots rather than by a single strike.
Grass produces the shortest, since serve and first strike carry disproportionate weight and a well-placed delivery is difficult to return with any depth.
The physical consequence is that clay seasons tax endurance while grass seasons tax reaction and precision, and players prepare for each accordingly.
Scheduling compresses the adjustment
The calendar moves from clay to grass in a matter of weeks, which is a short period to retrain movement patterns built over months.
Players manage this by choosing which events to skip, and some accept a weaker result on one surface to arrive fresh for the one that suits them.
The players who win across all three tend to be those whose baseline technique is adaptable rather than optimised, which is a rarer profile than raw dominance on any single surface.
