How Wimbledon's Seeding Departs From World Rankings
The championships have historically adjusted seeding to account for grass-court results, on the basis that world rankings are dominated by events on other surfaces.

Most tournaments seed strictly by world ranking. The grass-court championships have at times used a different method, and the reasoning behind it says something about how rankings work.
Rankings are weighted toward hard courts
The professional calendar contains far more hard-court events than grass ones, and the grass season occupies only a few weeks between the clay and hard-court blocks.
A player's ranking therefore reflects performance on surfaces that behave quite differently from grass, and it carries limited information about grass-court ability.
Because a short season also means few grass results, the sample available for any individual player is small even when it is strong.
A formula supplemented the ranking
The adjustment applied a defined calculation that added weight for grass-court results over recent seasons, then reordered the seeds accordingly.
It was published in advance and applied mechanically, so it was not a subjective judgement about who deserved a favourable draw.
The effect was usually modest, moving players a few places, but it occasionally produced a significantly different order at the top of the draw.
Seeding shapes the draw's structure
Seeds are distributed so that the highest-ranked cannot meet until the later rounds, which is the entire purpose of seeding in a knockout event.
A player seeded higher avoids other seeds for longer, and in a fortnight-long event that difference compounds across several rounds.
Getting the order wrong therefore has real consequences, since a grass-court specialist placed low can eliminate a leading player in an early round.
The practice attracted consistent objection
Players outside the adjustment's beneficiaries argued that a single tournament departing from the common ranking undermined the system every other event uses.
Supporters countered that seeding exists to predict results at that tournament, and a ranking built elsewhere predicts grass results poorly.
The argument is genuinely unresolved, because both positions describe a real function of seeding and the two functions conflict on an unusual surface.
Grass results remain hard to forecast regardless
Even with an adjustment, the surface produces more early upsets than the others, because serve dominance compresses matches and reduces the advantage of superior consistency.
Players arriving from a long clay season often need matches to adapt, and the first round can catch them mid-adjustment.
That volatility is part of the event's character, and no seeding method fully removes it, since it originates in how the surface rewards a single well-executed shot.
