How Green Speeds Are Measured And Controlled
A simple ramp device standardises how putting surface pace is recorded, and greenkeepers adjust that pace through mowing height, rolling and moisture management.

Putting surface pace is one of the few playing characteristics in sport that is measured with a standard instrument and reported as a number. The measurement is simple and the control of it is not.
The measuring device is a ramp with a fixed release point
A ball is released down an inclined bar from a notch, leaving the ramp at a consistent speed every time, and the distance it then rolls is recorded.
Readings are taken in both directions on a level section of the green and averaged, which cancels out any residual slope in the chosen area.
The figure produced is a distance rather than a velocity, and it describes the surface's resistance to a rolling ball rather than anything about how it plays uphill.
Mowing height is the primary control
Cutting the grass shorter reduces the friction acting on a ball, and greens are mown at heights that would kill most turf species outright.
The limit is agronomic. Below a certain height the plant cannot photosynthesise enough to sustain itself, and the surface becomes vulnerable to disease and heat stress.
Grass species were selected over time for their tolerance of low cutting, which is why the achievable pace has increased steadily across decades.
Rolling adds speed without additional cutting
Passing a light roller over a green smooths the surface and increases pace temporarily, without removing the leaf material the plant needs.
This gives greenkeepers a way to raise speed for a tournament while keeping cutting heights within a range the turf can survive.
The cost is compaction, which accumulates and restricts root development, so rolling is used in concentrated periods rather than continuously.
Moisture and weather move the reading daily
Surface moisture slows a green noticeably, so a reading taken in the early morning differs from one taken after the surface has dried.
Wind, humidity and temperature all affect the drying rate, which is why measurements are repeated through a tournament day rather than taken once.
Organisers manage this with targeted hand watering, applying moisture to specific areas rather than irrigating whole greens, in order to keep the surfaces consistent with each other.
Faster is not automatically better
Excessive pace restricts where holes can be cut, because a ball will not remain at rest on a slope that was designed for a slower surface.
Many older courses were built with severe contours on the assumption of slower greens, and pushing pace too high renders parts of them unusable.
Pace is therefore matched to the architecture rather than maximised, and a moderate reading on a heavily contoured green can be more demanding than a high one on a flat surface.
