How Doping Testing Works Between Games
Most anti-doping activity happens outside competition, relying on whereabouts reporting, long-term sample storage and biological monitoring rather than tests on the day of an event.

Testing at a competition catches relatively little, because substances that improve training can be cleared before an event. The system therefore operates continuously rather than at competitions.
Out-of-competition testing targets the training period
Many performance-enhancing substances produce their benefit during preparation, by allowing harder training or faster recovery, and are discontinued before competition.
Testing only at events would therefore miss the period when those substances are used, which is why unannounced testing during training is the core of the system.
Athletes in registered testing pools must be available for testing without notice, and the sample can be requested at any location.
Whereabouts reporting makes no-notice testing possible
Athletes in those pools file their location in advance, including a specified window each day when they will be available at a stated address.
Missing that window or filing inaccurately counts as a failure, and accumulating failures within a period constitutes an anti-doping rule violation on its own.
The requirement is intrusive and widely criticised, but no-notice testing has no alternative mechanism, since advance warning defeats the purpose entirely.
Samples are stored for retrospective analysis
Collected samples are retained for a long period, allowing reanalysis when detection methods improve or when new information emerges about a substance.
This has produced results years after competitions, with medals reallocated once stored samples were retested using techniques unavailable at the time.
The deterrent effect is the main purpose, since an athlete cannot rely on a substance remaining undetectable for the duration of the storage period.
Biological monitoring looks for effects rather than substances
An athlete passport records blood and steroid markers over time, establishing an individual baseline against which later readings are compared.
Unexplained deviations can indicate manipulation even when no prohibited substance is detected, which addresses methods that leave no direct trace.
Because the comparison is to the athlete's own history rather than a population range, it accommodates natural variation between individuals.
Enforcement is distributed and uneven
National anti-doping organisations, international federations and event organisers all conduct testing, with international standards intended to harmonise their procedures.
Capacity varies considerably between countries, so the frequency of testing an athlete faces depends partly on where they are based.
Independent testing bodies have been established partly to address this, separating the organisations that promote a sport from those responsible for policing it.
